Understanding Storage A Little Better

Tips For Keeping Your Storage Unit Pest Free

A pest infestation in your storage unit can cause extreme losses, especially if you are storing valuable but delicate items. The pests can even migrate into nearby storage units and damage other people's belongings.

Below are some of the measures you can take to keep pests out of your storage unit.

Don't Store Pests

Most pests, especially insects, multiply very first. A couple of such critters in your storage unit can multiply and cause serious damage within a short period. Therefore, the first measure is to ensure that you don't introduce any pests into the storage unit alongside your belongings.

Dry and Clean Before Storage

Most pests are attracted to what humans consider dirt, especially organic dirt. Moisture is another thing that attracts pests. Avoiding those two things will go a long way in avoiding pest infestation. That is why it's advisable to clean and dry your items before taking them to the storage unit; by doing so, you will reduce the attraction of pests to the unit.

Don't Store Food

Many storage units have policies against food storage. This is because food can attract pests, and the pests can spread to other clients' units and cause damage. Therefore, don't store foods in your storage units if you don't want pest damage.

Raise Storage Boxes

Raising storage boxes above the floor can also deter pest attacks. This is particularly true of small insects that don't fly. For example, you can place your storage boxes on top of wooden pallets to allow some space between the pallets and the storage unit's floor.

Use Storage Boxes

If some pests do make it into your storage damage, they can cause serious damage if your stored items are exposed. Therefore, keep your things in storage boxes or wrap them up to prevent pest damage. For example, wrap up your pieces of furniture and keep your books in storage boxes instead of just throwing them into the storage unit.

Use Pest Deterrents

Suitable pest deterrents can also help you prevent pest damage. There are even organic or natural pest deterrents and don't pose any harm to the environment. For example, cedar, peppermint, and lavender have been known to discourage various forms of pests.

Choose the Storage Unit Carefully

Lastly, you should also use a storage unit that takes pest prevention seriously. Such a storage unit should have pest-prevention policies, clean and well-maintained grounds, and properly sealed storage units, among other measures. Speak to your chosen facility's manager for further information on pest-deterrent measures.
